THE ECEWS/NKA UFORO IBAN’S PROJECT 2009

In 2009, Nka Uforo Iban partnered with Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS), a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS in the rural communities of Nigeria..

REPORT ON ADVOCACY AND SELECTION OF BENEFICIARIES FOR THE ECEWS/NKA UFORO IBAN’S PROJECT 2022

 

Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS) in partnership with Nka Uforo Iban Akwa Ibom State, Washington DC. is implementing the Market Women Empowerment Project to help improve the livelihood of ultra-poor households in Eket, Ikot Ekpene and Oron Local government areas of Akwa Ibom State by investing her small grant to improve their small-scale businesses. The project is scaleup from a pilot intervention earlier implemented in Uyo and Abak Local Government areas. The target populations are the widows, physically challenged, aged and vulnerable women.

ADVOCACY

ECEWS Team with Members of the Market Committee in Oron

The ECEWS Team caried out an advocacy visit to Eket, Ikot Pene, and Oron local government areas during which they met with local government officials, market executives and other critical stakeholders.

During the visits, the ECEWS team briefed the stakeholders on the project, target beneficiaries and criteria for beneficiaries’ selection. The meetings also afforded the ECEWS team wit the opportunity to receive input from the stakeholders to help in the implementation, and secure the buy in of the stakeholders who welcomed and pledged support for the intervention.

Beneficiaries were identified and selected with the help of the stakeholders for ownership and sustainability of the project.  Also the stakeholdes were briefed on the stages of the project to include orientation, training, disbursement of funds, monitoring and evaluation. The criteria were:

  • Ultra-Poor household
  • Physically challenged
  • Widows unable to care for their family needs
  • Single parents who could not take care of other family responsibilities
  • Women who made less than 350-500 naira per day as profit from sales etc.
NEXT STEPS
  •  Market Enterprise Training of selected beneficiaries
  •  Disbursement of grant funds to beneficiaries
  •  Monitoring and evaluation of the project
  •  Close out and Reporting

The project should accomodate more women in the future
